Grated Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe

This very old recipe is from Georgia, and I have hung onto it for years. You won’t believe how good it is! It’s a favorite at family gatherings.

Yields 8 servings. For family dinners, I usually double the recipe.


4 cups raw sweet potatoes, peeled and grated

1-1/2 cups milk

1 cup sugar

2 eggs, beaten

½ cup butter

½ cup all spice

½ cup cinnamon

½ cup coconut (optional)


Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.

Mix sugar, butter, eggs, milk, and spices.  Add to grated potatoes.  Mix well and pour into a buttered ½ quart baking dish.

Bake for 1-2 hours or until light crust forms on top.  When crust forms around sides of the baking dish, stir the coconut into the middle of the potato mixture.  Smooth the top and finish baking until potatoes are tender.
