My kids all help each other. It’s like I birthed them all; I birthed them through love. I adopted them because love wouldn’t let go. I fell in love with them and I couldn’t let go. I had to keep them.
My wife and I have been with Seraaj [Family Homes, Inc.] since either 1999 or 2000. We’ve adopted six kids and raised even more. I do whatever I can, as long as God gives me and my wife the strength.
“The key thing is if you’re going to foster you have to love kids,” said Mattie. “You have to have patience. If you don’t have love for children and you don’t have patience, then don’t get into this business.”
Richard “Rusty” Kays has been involved with the foster care system for most of his life. He says he grew up in foster care since he was 3 days old and aged out of the system when he was 18. Swoopes has been a nurturer since she was a child. She’s the eleventh child of 14. She says she enjoyed having a large family and being surrounded by kids. Swoopes remembers her older siblings being protective of her, just as she was protective of her younger siblings. She recalls her mom and father teaching her and her siblings to always look out for each other, and now she’s doing that for others’ children.
